Surplus Gel Cell Batteries In Texas

Does anyone know of  a location in Dallas that sells surplus 12V closed gel cell batteries? A ham buddy of mine once told me of a man who bulk purchased these from the military and resold these to hams. This location or any source in Texas would be .good. Unless they are very inexpensive and proven to be useable, you are usualy better off just getting new. New isn't too bad costwise, think like a 12v 7ah will be around $25 or less before shipping, a bulk sale should get you a lower price. If you can pick it up yourself you're ahead of the game. New means it will last a long time if cared for, used by the military often means used up.

I few months ago I got several new 8 AH 12v gell cells for some UPS backup power supplies off Ebay for less than 25 each shipped. I do not even bother with 7 AH versions.

Check with the local hospitals and EMTs. It used to be that they were required to replace all their batteries every 90 days regardless of their condition. That may still be true.

Sorry I can't give you more info re voltage,
capacity, etc. The fellow DID say that they
were big, heavy, and that he was quite pleased with
them.

I asked the engineering staff about this at one of the hospitals where
I did my X-Ray Tech externship work. They said they would love to help me
out, but their policy was that since it was a "Hazardous Recyclable" item,
they could only let them go to a licensed recycling company.
YMMV depending on location and the hospital. Both Federal and, especially
here in CA, state hazardous recyling laws
are very strict.
