How did the old telegraph sounders work?  In old movies they sound like the thing is just clicking and I can't get any of the code at all.  Is there a museum anywhere that has working examples?  Just curious.

They did just click.  So it was all dots.  Characters were combinations of dots and spaces.  There are sites that show the old railroad telegraph code characters.  It differs from the international morse code that we use today.
