While I'm asking about old stuff, were sleeve garters and a green eyeshade de rigour for telegraphists?  How many of you guys wear sleeve garters?  Is there some cryptic connection between telegraphists and barbarshnop quartet singers wearing sleeve garters?

Sleeve protectors and green eyeshades were standard issue in the old days for any job that required extensive writing (bookkeepers, telegraphers, etc).  The eyeshades proteted you from harsh artificial light, and the sleeve protectors kept ink and pencil dust off the white shirts.  As lighting technology evolved from incandescent to flourescent, the eyeshades became less popular.  Same thing happened to sleeve guards as writing materials evolved from the "dip the pen in the ink well" technology to typewriters and ball points.
