I love my vx-7r but I can't live with the stupid rotating belt clip anymore. The radio keeps falling off and spinning around wile I'm hiking. Is there anyway to put a NORMAL belt clip on a Yaesu vx-7r? I'm to the point where I'm thinking about buying another HT just to get a functional belt clip!

Get a belt case that it will fit in.  I find it is much
easier to get the radio back into a case than to try to
find my belt to hook it on, especially when wearing a
waist belt on my backpack.

The one I use is an old one, probably from Radio Shack
for carrying a cordless phone handset.

Actually, for backpacking I liked to put the HT in a side
pocket of my pack and use a speaker mic clipped to the
shoulder straps.  If you are using the rubber duck you
want it mounted as high on the pack as possible.  I built
a half wave 2m vertical (out of a base-loaded CB mobile
whip) and attached it to the top of the frame, which gave
me a great signal, but also made for a wet hike in the
mornings as it knocked the dew off the overhead branches
down onto my head.

Thanks for that - I've just had a VX-7r for my birthday and could see exactly the same issue arising, especially if I added an improved aerial.

We've got a military surplus store nearby and I'm not averse to a bit of tin-smithing to line an ammo-pouch. A pair of matching pouches on a bit of webbing would make space for an extra battery pack.

I suppose in these paranoid times I'd best remember never to wear it into the city though, or I'll find myself face down with a gun between my shoulderblades, or even worse shot on sight... which wouldn't be good.

I have a standard-horizon 270 on the way (marine band) and it uses the same horrible belt clip so I'm thinking of adapting a belt clip from a Motorola Saber to the single point attachment on the back, will post if it works well enough.

The bad belt clip is one reason I recently bought a FT250R instead of a 170 for my frequency-agile 2 meter needs.

i was thinking about some of the inexpensive camera cases that are available,  take a look at wal mart to see if they have a pouch that might be adaptable.

you might consider the following aftermarket item as a belt clip/case for the VX-7R.

http://products.lowepro.com/product/Geneva-10,2187,25.htm

$15. Works for me!

Hello.

The VX-7R is an impressive radio, except for this "cellphone" style clip thing.
But there is an excellent solution that is cheap.
Get a screw that is just long enough to fit the hole and a washer as well as a paper clamp of the type that has a hole for mounting on a board.
Now put the screw and washer through the hole on the clamp and screw this together.
Simply clamp this, radio and all, to your whatever.
The screw will come off long before the clamp does, a real possibility, and why the washer.
