About a month ago my friends BANDSCOPE started displaying levels 2 to 3 grids lower than before.  The levels almost look like whitenoise now. Almost like a normal level is being attenuated 60dB. The radio hears fine, we compared it to his FT1000D.  The BANDSCOPE attenuator is off ( I cycled through the choices), I tried each span setting.  Cycled through the preamp selections and attenuator selections. We did a hard reset of the radio as a last resort.

Any ideas before we send it off for repairs....

Did you try it without an antenna connected? Silly but may help isolate the issue.
