Along the lines of the other thread that revolves around sighting ham gear or operations in movies ... I just reread the book "The Protected Will Never Know" by Leigh Wade.  It's a firsthand account of operations in the Airborne (173rd) and Special Forces during the Vietnam War by one of the operators.  It just so happens his specialty was as a radio operator.  The book is mostly about the combat operations side of the thing, but most every chapter has at least some discussion of the radios and procedures they were using.

This was discussed here on eham a few months ago; a search will probably find the thread for you.  My own contribution was the book, _The Anderson Tapes_, which involved ham radio used to alert police to a robbery.  There were a bunch of others listed, though.
