Before we had any soundblaster cards !

The program controlled a speaker that was part of the diagnostic subsystem in the computer.

I bet they could not run this program very often,
given the expense of operating these machines.

In the early 1970s programmers discovered that they could write routines that caused IBM high-speed (1100 LPM) line printers to play music. Many tunes were "recorded" on punched cards. It was possible to play two octaves with quarter to full notes. Morse routines were also composed.
