I got a little ht that is giving me fits. I tried to turn it on the other day and it would not turn on. Took battery out put it in another vx5r I have turned right on put external power to it still no luck. Put it aside and a couple days later I put battery back in turned right on turned off and on 5 or 6 times no problems. Now the key pad does not work it does not show it as being locked but I can't use key board to try to unlock if it is locked. It won't let me reset it so I am stumped Huh any input would be great.

Call Yaesu :

For Technical Support or Customer Service call, (714)827-7600 between 8AM – 5PM PST For Parts Department call (714)827-7600 (8AM – 5PM PST)

The keypads are known to go bad and it is a cheap easy fix if you can do it yourself.

Hmmm, these guys used to sell them.   http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/ht/1795.html

Maybe Yaesu doesnt have parts for the 5R anymore....I would call the parts department and see if you can order the keypad.

Good luck.

W9HQE,

According to Yaesu's website, the VX-5R is a supported product.  I think I'd ask to speak to a different tech.

http://www.yaesu.com/indexVS.cfm?cmd=DisplayProducts&ProdCatID=111&encProdID=CD3B6BACCEAD8F8C402AA08D8CCC2517&DivisionID=65&isArchived=1

In any event, I don't own a VX-5R, but wonder if it might be possible to reset it through the programming software rather than the keypad?  Huh

Good luck with it

N5VTU we think a like I am borrowing a software/ cable set up and seeing if I can reset it that way. If not a guy in Florida has a new key pad and circuit board so  I will get it from him.

see this thread...

http://www.eham.net/ehamforum/smf/index.php/topic,80964.0.html

I had the same problem with mine not turning on. If the button was pressed firmly with, lets say, the point of a pen, then it would power on. I sprayed the keypad with Radio Shack contact cleaner, pressed all the buttons repeatedly, then hit it with 20 psi of air pressure. That was about 3 months ago and it is still working.
