Hello! I'm glad you have a desire to get into ham radio. An "elmer" is a mentor or sorts. It is one of those terms that has made its way into ham lingo over many years of use.
As for your code abilities - the only cw test presently being given is a 5 word per minute receiving test. You can pass it by showing one minute of solid copy.
As it stands now - it looks like all code tests will be removed very shortly.
As for the written (theory) test - I suggest getting the book "Now You're Talking" published by the American Radio Relay Leage (www.arrl.org
). The book is designed to be used in a class or independent study. If possible find a class near you - the arrl can help you locate one. While most hams do learn their theory through self study - I think the classroom environment has much to offer.
