I am going to replace all of my VHF/UHF connectors to N crimp type on LMR400 coax.  I have been looking at different tools.  Some are way too expensive and some are so cheap that they scare me.   Any suggestions on prep and crimp tools would be appreciated.

Look at RF Industries Tool/Dies/Connectors from RF Parts (rfparts.com) or tessco.com

I just bought the stripper and crimper that DavisRF sells and have been happy with them.  I don't have anything to compare them to, but they work fine for me so far.  The middle crimper does 9913/LMR400/213U and RG174 as well.

I bought my crimper from Ham City and it is comparable to any of the high priced crimpers. Take a look.
