Hello,

I am trying to get a list of the items needed to connect my Ft-840 to my HP desktop computer.  I do not want to work any digital modes
I simply want to control the radio from my PC (not remote control).  Please correct me if I am wrong but, I think I need the CAT cable which will run from the radio to the computer.  Since my PC does not have a RS-232 serial port I will also need a USB to RS-232 converter. Is there anything else I need (Drivers) or need to know.  The software I intend to use is Ham Radio Deluxe.

Am I correct in assuming that I do not need an interface in lieu of the fact that I am not working any digital modes?  Also, since this radio is fairly old what will I be able to control with the computer?  I am not sure this is worth the effort but I am curious.

Any information or additional  advice (where to purchase cables) which would help me link these items together would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Steve here, KB6HOH in the SF Bay Area. Boy I have never had so much problem trying to download a User Manual until now! Anyway you are correct, if you don't have a Standard Serial Port on the PC you will need a USB to Serial Adapter. I highly recommend one from Keyspan. I use to be a Assist Tech Manager and Lead Tech for CompUSA I tested several for myself. I use one here on my Windows 7 32bit Ultimate and NO problems.
Here is a YouTube link I found for the FT-840 and HRD:

Also I pulled this off the HRD Fourms:

Good Luck!

If you don't already have the CAT cable then I would suggest buying a USB to CAT cable. No physical serial port or USB to serial adapter cable needed. The USB to CAT cable comes with a CD containing a driver that creates a virtual serial port that you can see when you open Device Manager on your PC.

Here's an example from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/FT-100-FT-817-Chipset-Supports-Windows/dp/B0041LNISK

Ebay has numerous sources for even cheaper ones. Just search "CAT to USB" in the Electronics section.

Hi Steve - I recommend you check out this site:  http://www.g4zlp.co.uk/unified/YaesuCAT.shtml

I have been using one of his cables for my FT-840 for five or six years now, and it has performed flawlessly.  Shipping is VERY fast, even though he is overseas.
