How long can you license be expired before you have to take the code over again

Not completely true.  If you have ever held a NOVICE license, it grants permanent credit for the 5wpm code no matter how long it has been expired.  You just have to prove that you did indeed hold a Novice license.

Expired General, Advanced, or Extra licenses do not grant credit after expiration.  They can be re-instated, including the code, if renewed within the 2 year grace period.

Credit can also be given for a Technician license issued prior to February 14th , 1991 , even an expired one .The rule is inconsistent , but it IS the rule .See part 97.505 of the FCC rules .
