Yeah.  I was in the same pile up.  As soon as they ask for West Coast my XYL demanded that I shut off the rig  Angry

This might interest you. I worked 7O6T with my HW-9 last night. Its No. 245 for the old HW-9.  Grin So its still plugging along. I don't know for how much longer - its 28 years old this year! ... readable copy of the upper side of the signal, as long as nobody is calling close to the DX signal. Then you can use your RIT to get "up 2" or as much as "up 2.5".

Larry, I think a LOT of us were interested in that!   Smiley    Bagging a rare one with an old QRP rig--that is some REAL ham radio, there!  Congratulations and thanks for sharing it with us!

Ah!!  Propagation, the great equalizer.

I remember the first time I ever worked into Europe with my old TenTec 509 with a whopping
3 watts SSB out using an indoor homebrew antenna from my second floor apartment.
Of course this was over 35 years ago and there weren't so many "Legal Limit Amps".  Hams
seemed a bit more civil etc.  With a clear spot on the bands those little signals will make
it.

Right on cue, they shut down at precisely 2100z. Congrats to the team on a fantastic operation, and showing everybody else how to do it right. May their travels home be safe, swift and uneventful!

If someone could only show the LIDS, KIDS and SPACE CADETS how to do it right, it might have been a fun DXpedition. As it was, it wasn't even close to being civil or fun for me. I spent over a week of time with butt in the chair to only hear crap and noise with one chance for a couple of minutes to work them only to have what little hearing I have left worsened by 40+ db carriers by the blasted tuner-uppers.

Congrats to all those that did work them. Enjoy and savor the triumph.

Gene W5DQ - one of many who I'm sure WON'T be waiting on a QSL card.

Yes, Bravo to the group for bringing many of us a new one. You showed how a top-notch DX'pedition should operate and a job well done. Have a safe trip back home.

As I mentioned in by Facebook feed (www.facebook.com/W2IRT), I'm not convinced that they'll pull off DXpedition Of The Year, even assuming nobody else comes close, including the ZL9--from whom I'm not expecting much in NA due to their time-of-day environmental restrictions.

If you compare the overall stats of 7O6T vs HK0NA, the numbers are quite telling. Using the May 14th stats for 7O, 65% of their Qs went to Europe, 19% to North America and 14% to Asia (all percentages rounded to the nearest integer), with 36,441 uniques.

The Malpelo guys did 46% NA, 41% Europe and 7.3% to Asia, limited by the mountain, not operator skill or propagation. They worked 42,490 uniques. Their numbers were more balanced NA/EU-wise than was 7O and they definitely spent more time looking for Europe than 7O did looking for NA.

7O's signals were crushingly loud and their ops, especially the Russian CW guys, were fast and accurate beyond belief. It was also a far more rare -- and potentially dangerous -- location than Malpelo, so give them that too. Still, though, in terms of best of 2012?  I love the fact that an entity I was convinced would be one of the last 2 or 3 I'd need for HR#1 came up this fast and represented that well, but the overall distribution of QSOs world-wide may tip the scale in Malpelo's favour.

Let's see what the rest of 2012 brings. Did someone say Navassa? (pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease)

7O's signals were crushingly loud   ................

Oh had this been true here in 6 land, I might be a happy camper today ..... here in the Mojave Desert, 7O6T's signals were peaking at a whopping S-'nothing' most of the time. Barely discernable at the best of times .... both of the days when it occured.  Sad

To Paul and the Team:

Thanks for being there, especially in light of the news stories coming out of that region recently....Only 2 20 meter SSB qsos here (one for insurance)....otherwise, could not get through the CW zoo....Glass half full....Thank you for my 285th country all time (278th without the deleteds) and 3rd newbie of 2012.....Get home safely!....

Indeed, thanks you to the team that made this possible.  Signals varied at my QTH from S-1 on 20m phone to crushing on about all bands on CW.  I was able to snag them on 15m CW with 100w and my 160m windom.  I also kept a streak alive by working a slim.  This time on 20m CW.  I wish I would have not been so busy with work this past month, and bagged them on a few more bands. But last year when I got serious into DXing the thought of working Yemen would have seemed like a dream.

Hopefully P5 will become a reality soon too.
