First off, this is not truly APRS, but I am pretty sure you guys can help anyway. I am getting ready to buy a Uniden HomePatrol-1 scanner
http://www.uniden.com/scanners/homepatrol-1-simple-program-scanner/invt/homepatrol1g/ It is able to be connected to a GPS receiver and many people get Uniden’s BC‐GPSK Serial GPS Receiver
http://www.amazon.com/Uniden-BC-GPSK-Receiver-Scanner-Products/dp/B005P99KRU Anyway, I am wondering if it is possible to get a Garmin automobile GPS and use it for both road navigation AND the Uniden HomePatrol-1?
Also, if that is possible, what cable(s) should I use? Since I need a serial GPS, I ahve looked at the GTRANS Garmin to NMEA Translator Cable (D-Sub Style)
https://www.argentdata.com/catalog/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=&products_id=114 and the Garmin Data Cable (Mini-B to Serial Pigtail)
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=1449 Can anybody tell me if these cables are basically the same and would they work in this application?
What I am thinking about doing is just getting the Uniden Home Patrol-1, getting one of those two cables, preferably the Garmin cable, since it is less expensive, and then buying a used Garmin Nuvi 350 and connecting the GPS to the scanner.
Again, I apologize since this isn't truly APRS, but it is close. Thank you in advance for any assitance anybody is able to giv me with this.
