right now, globalstar contracts are priced less than cellphone contracts. For $100-ish you can get a used/refurb phone and make phone calls and send SMS messages from/to anywhere in the world.

The price break is due to them not having a complete satellite constellation so the coverage isn't continuous. And, I'd imagine the price will go back up once all of the satellites are in place, but, in the mean time...

All this seems to be is a extension of the OnStar system put out by GM.  It makes more sense to have individual units that are portable rather than having them attached to a vehicle.  Oh, wait--isn't that the purpose and use of a cell phone--tracking and all?

This is fine untill world war three. All the combatants have asat capabilities and the debris from all the destroyed sats wizzing around up there will likely take out all the rest. We could end up with a ring like Saturn!
