Looking for a working power supply for an Icom 736 HF Transceiver.

Ron,

20-25A Astrons are a dime a dozen, at almost any hamfest. And they are usually 1/2 the price of a new one.

But I think (has been a while) the finals require 28v.  I used plans from the ARRL handbook, very stable plus crow bar.

Thanks for the suggestions.  Yes, the power supply supplies both 13.8V and 28V.  I've been debating about whether to debug the one I have or just buy a replacement, but it looks like I'll be going the debugging route...

RPR:  What kind of power supply are you trying to replace or debug.  Never heard of a dual-voltage supply and would be interested in seeing the schematic.

I thought the IC736 connected directly to 120VAC power. Are you trying to replace the internal power supply? If so, you're probably going to have to fix the existing one unless you run across someone who has a scrap 736 with a good supply. Or you'll have to build a custom external supply. My guess is that the internal supply is a dual-voltage switching type.

The IC738 is the 13.8VDC input version of the 736.

Yes, the 736 connects directly to the AC mains.  I have been trying to find a scrap 736 with a good supply.  And it is a dual-voltage supply (13.8V / 28V).

I managed to find someone with a non-working 736, but there was only what sounded like a fairly minor problem with it so it was more money that I wanted to spend.

Strange radio. The 736 was HF/6m with a built in dual voltage supply. The 738 looked the same but ran on 13.8v and did not have 6m.. Totally different final. The 738 doesn't show to have been imported to the use???

I do have owner and service manuals.

I've been using an IC-738 for quite a few years, and I bought it right here in the USA, brand new, from AES Las Vegas.
