I just got a steal on a 6800W "Orange" receiver ($20!!!), it works great but it has some minor issues (pots/switches need cleaning, and the preselect scale is loose inside).

I'd like to just fix those simple things. The back comes off easy enough, but I can't figure out how to access the front panel to get at those components without completely removing everything from inside piece by piece.

Has anyone worked on one of these? Apparently they're notoriously difficult to work on, but I'd really like to look at a copy of the service manual if someone has one. Does the outside casing slide off somehow? or what am I missing?

Thanks!

Welcome to my world.

The service shop was how I got through school.

EIAJ stuff is really very simple if you take your time and examine it.

Typically, back cover removes with screws that are marked with arrows or the like.

PCB is usually mounted to front cover with screws through it, find them, they will typically have ISA phillips heads and all the same head and color.

Board hold down screws may also have solder pads around them, may not.  Sometimes silkscreening around them, sometimes not.

Usually pulling the screws will allow the entire thing to be pulled out of the front half.

Never force anything, take your time, if you pull several screws and can't get it out, look carefully for another screw around the area of most resistance.

Once in a great while there may also be plastic clips holding board edges, just lightly pry them back long enough for the board to pop past them.

You can get the Service Manual but don't expect it to be much more help than maybe showing you all the screws, waste of money.

G'luck, mate.

Actually, the service manual for the ICF-6800W is very helpful and shows the type, size, and clear locations of the fasteners for the case. There's also very thorough flow charts/diagrams for orderly removal of the various modules and for alignment of the Sony.

Sony clearly put some effort into producing the ICF-6800W service manual, but of course it can't compare to the best of the manuals for milcomm receivers, for instance,
