I recently got a T-4X for cheap to go with my R-4B.  What is the difference beside the the vfo dial?  Some one said the t-4x is not good on SSB.

As someone who has and uses lots of old Drake gear, I will weigh in on your questions.

There is not much significant electrical difference between the T4X and the T4XB.  The basic design is the same.  If a T4X sounds crappy on SSB, then something is wrong.

I have a T-4X and early model (13 tube) R-4A that I use regularly.  I have owned them since 1965 and have had a lot of fun with them.  Come join the Drake Tech Net on Sundays at 2000Z (4 pm EDT) 7.238 Mhz and have a listen.  I use an Electrovoice 664 mic and have had good audio reports on SSB for years.

If you have a problem with your Drake twins, I am sure those on the net can help you with some suggestions for getting them back to working well.
