Sorry, although im sure it was a very genuine question, it certainly isnt a simple one!
What actual usable info was given? Bands 20, 15, 10. Thats all. So, all we know is to confine our answers to antennas for 20, 15 and 10m. He asked 'not too tall', but how tall is 'too tall'? What sort of mount is he using? Is he using an ATU, or do the antennas have to be exactly matched? Does he want only commercial antennas or will he homebrew? SO little to go on
Cecils answer, for a good homebrew, is excellent.
I use modified hamsticks (shortened fibreglass section) because my car is small.
The only way to truly answer Johns question is with the answre 'use what works for you and is in your budget'
