A very nice rig indeed however, I think it will be way too expensive for the average ham with a mediocre income such as myself
Most high end rigs aren't intended for the "average"
ham. There are automobiles designed and marketed
for various income groups, why shouldn't it be so
for ham radios?
If someone GAVE me a 990 I would indeed take
it, be very grateful and no doubt love it.
I have a 940 as my backup
rig now and it is till a terrific radio.
BUT, if I had the $5k or $8k or whatever the 990
price is available for station upgrade, I would
spend it on better antennas. My current main
rig is 756 PROII, my current antenna a roof mounted
HF6V vertical. At this point a tower and yagi(s)
would improve my station performance far more
than a new "high end" rig, no matter what the cost.
Then there is the old axiom:
An excellent operator with mediocre equipment
will make far more contacts than a mediocre
operator with excellent equipment.
I don't think it is "Game Over" for anyone. There
are enough folks who are brand loyal no matter
what the competition offers.
Just my two cents....
