Current base rig with the best general coverage rx

 Time to upgrade the Icom706mk2g to maybe a Ft950, Kenwood 590 or something in current production. I think most all rigs tx fine in the ham bands but what about general coverage? I
would like one that rx well below 550khz, my Kenwood r2000 is ok but I would like one rig to replace it and the 706. I plan on dxing (receive) when the 630meter band opens and enjoy beacon dixing as well as longwave from Europe in the winter.

Your reception will be limited by your antenna, not the rig.  So pick one that is good for the ham bands and enjoy it.

Not always true... try tuning the icom 746 below 1600 khz and let me know what happens. ;-)

Could an SDR (software-defined radio) work for you?  A Flex ?  One of the less-expensive models?

Well, I'm listening to 540 kHz right now, WFLA, on my Cushcraft R8 which has a bottom tuned frequency of 7mhz and 300' of coax.

They're coming in about 20 over S9 with the attenuation turned off.

That's what happens here.

trying to find a modern 100w transceiver with good reception below AM broadcast band.
