google it yourself .. type 746pro backlight repair... or youtube the same search criteria.. i did and youll find it.

The backlight repair has nothing to do with replacing the bulb. I have googled it. I even wrote a PPT presentation on mods.dk, on how to repair the backlight inverter.

You said there were links to replacing the backlight lamp. Those are the ones I am looking for. That does not come up in Google search.

vinnie.

if you use google correctly and type in 746pro backlight failure. its works.. i have no problem finding a couple videos and pics of guys taking the 746pro apart and changing the flourescent tube.

the radio does not have bulbs as the older icoms had. it is a tube on the left side of the lcs. its a plug in bulb with a plastic clip. the new bulb comes from icom ready to plug in..

if you are thinking of lacquer coating (GC used to sell 6-color dip kits) know it doesn't take long for the lacquer to burn brown.  silicone color caps will go a little longer, depending on the brightness of the bulb.  T1s last darn near forever, T3-1/4s often get hot enough to darken the SiliCap within months.

temp-resistant paints are opaque, don't be fooled.

acrylic color sheets will last the longest.  theatrical gels are quite availiable.  if you are tempted to pick up some photo filter sheets, be advised they are gelatin, scratch easily, fade indeed, and are not temperature stable.

You should correct / update that MODS.DK presentation, now that you have seen a cold cathode lamp,
and the video of its replacement.
As Scott, KD0REQ noted -- color gels work best.

Yaesu uses colored gel tubes and caps (green, red, orange) for a
number of their radios FT-102, FT-107, FT-2800m, etc.
