One solution is to get the Signalink, and the help of an Elmer.  I have the Signalink and it is easy.  But an old ham buddy of mine has been stuck on 80 meters SSB for his lifetime, and had some interest in digital.  I had him buy a Signalink, and then stopped by his house and set it up for him on his older Kenwood in about a half hour.  I showed him a few times how to do PSK 31 and also JT65, and actually made contact with a European station from California as his first JT65 QSO, and actually for him the first time he ever worked Europe.  He was like a teenager on his first date!

When I left his house he was all set.  No more complicated than doing email.  Turn on the rig, launch the right software and click a few buttons.   I never thought of myself as an Elmer, but I guess in this case I got an old buddy over the hump of digital in a fun few hours.

If all else fails there is bound to be help nearby.  It is worth it.
