For UHF/VHF I also use a dual band slim-jim design. I also have a nice long length of clothesline with a weight or a ball on the end that I can throw over (or into) the nearest tree. I haul the slim-jim up as high as I can, attached to the end of the clothesline (using the tree branch as a pulley) and I get a good result. Sometimes I have to cut the clothesline as the ball or weight gets stuck in the tree, but no biggie... it's cheap.
