I am going to put a dual band mobile radio in my bedroom and would like to know what type and size power supply I should get for it. Thanks

Hello KI4HBX, More information is needed. What is the maximum transmit power of the rig. I would make an assumption that it requires 13.8 volts DC. The maximum transmit power will determine the current requirement of the transceiver power supply.

The rule of thumb given to me way back in the dark ages by Merlin himself was to look at the fuse in the power cable, take the fuse size and add 10%.  That gave you the minimum sized power supply you would want for that piece of equipment.

I am rapidly getting to point of saying avoid anything that has the letters MFJ on it.  I have had good experiences with Astron and Samlex brands.  Switching type supplies are smaller and lighter than the older big iron transformer types and I would go with one of them.

A 11 or 12 amp supply will do fine. And thing more is really overkill.

Hello again, As W8JX has said a power supply either switching or not will require about 11 or 12 amps.

I am thinking about getting the Astron rs-20m 16/20 or should I go ahead and get the rs-35m 25/35 ?
My rig will pull around 9 or 10 amps by its self on high power 50 watts.

Are you going to be transmitting on that rig?  If you are, are you going to using full power while transmitting?

If you're only going to be listening or transmitting on low power, you can get by with a five to ten amp supply.  If you're going to be using the rig at full transmit power, however, you'll need a heavier supply--the 'look at the fuses' rule of thumb would apply.  If the rig is fused at 15 amps, get a fifteen amp supply.

You may get by with a smaller supply for full power transmitting, but you would be straining the power supply when transmitting, and it will fail sooner or later.
