They've just possibly voted for secession.

I saw that on the Drudge report yesterday and wondered the same thing.

From what I gather though, an actual new state is a long way off. But they've seemingly taken an important step which means it may happen sooner than later.

Is it kind of like what Somaliland, Northern Cyprus, the north part of Mali, parts of the Republic of Georgia, and probably a few other separatists movements have done?  Look how many of those are on the DXCC list.  Not to sound pessimistic, but I think lots of areas have non-binding or non-recognized votes for succession.  Puerto Rico just voted to become a state.  I wouldn't rush out buying new flags yet.

Puerto Rico's vote is non-binding. I don't see them becoming a state yet.

The key will be UN membership, which they may be able to get. This will make them a DXCC entity versus, say, Kosova.

From what I understand, Catalonia is pretty much already separate in spirit. They have their own language and customs. Some QSL cards I get even say "Catalunya" instead of Spain.

So if Texas and other states secede from the Union, I shouldn't count them as in-the-bag just yet?   Undecided

I live 35 miles from the Red River.  I will mount one of the first DXpeditions to Texas!  Wait, I guess they have enough resident hams. There goes my hope of going on a DXpedition.

UN membership is not absolutely essential. If the ITU assigns Catalonia prefix (as in the case of Palestine), then it shall count as a new entity for DXCC.

And since the ITU is an arm of the UN, the UN at least recognizing the state is essential.

So my point stands. (and this is why Kosova isn't yet a DXCC entity)

Greetings friends.
I'm catalan and see very far Catalonia becomes a new DXCC, more than anything, believe me when I say that those who want independence from Spain is the power of Catalonia, the above, not all Catalans.

I'm not sure I understand everyone's position on this. Would this be a good thing, DX-wise? Is everyone excited by the possibility of this being a new entity? If so, why?

It's a bit of a moot point seeing as secession is unlikely - at least if the Spanish government has its way. If they are successful at it some day, then it clearly would become a new entity (once it meets the DXCC recognition requirements).

I think we've quietly reached a point comparable to the point De Soto reached when DXCC was invented.

As anyone who read his famous paper knows, radio was so basic, the major feats were just WAC and setting distance records.

Well, De Soto, by 1938 or whenever it was, could see the handwriting on the wall for all that stuff, so he came up with the core of DXCC.

We've reached a comparable problem.  Unless we want to change the rules to allow every submerged inlet and every dinky rock that stands above the waves to qualify, we are pretty much done with new ones.

Sure, once in a great while, some sharp-eyed DXer will find some island or other to qualify, but there's been a lot of sharp eyed DXers looking for a lot of years and that harvest is probably done enough for this discussion even if there are a handful to be found, somehow.

So, absent armed revolutions, which will happen (Iraq is about medium-likely to break into three pieces in my judgement/guess), there just aren't going to be a lot of new ones.

I remember a buddy who reached with mock joy when the Albanian revolution happened, but seriously, while we will accept such outcomes, is anyone going to root for more war and pestilence just because it might create two or three "new ones" that will look suspiciously like the "old ones," every decade or so.

And, even this isn't always exciting.  When Curacao, and Bonaire split off a while back, I was far more irritated than excited.  I mean, seriously, is it that big a deal to rework these?  I suspect many JA reacted with something between disgust and resignation.

And that one was peaceful.

If Catalonia ever successfully splits off from Spain--unlikely as that will be for quite a while--then it will qualify as soon as the UN recognizes it. No biggie. Doesn't bother me any; any EA entity is dirt-simple to work from NA or other EU entities. Probably just a matter of one or two days to have them on 9 bands and 3 modes. Maybe even 10 once 6m opens up. To be honest, whatever is in the best interest of the People affected is the end goal for me, be it secession or unity.

From my perspective as a DXer, however, the fewer "new ones" created the happier I am. I don't get a kick out of reworking a gerrymandered entity, truth be told, especially one that only serves to push #1 HR even further away. Start deleting a few that should never have qualified in the first place (yes, including the ones I already have) and I'll be cheering.
