FT-450D defective or is operator defective?

So, I just received a slightly used Yaesu FT-450D xcvr.

Running through several tests - I find when I go to AM or FM mode, the VFO locks on frequency. I cannot vary the frequency. No the VFO "lock" is not on. And, all modes are available according to the menu (my modes). USB/LSB/CW/DATA all permit VFO to work...

Any 450 guys out there?

There's a menu option (on the FT-817 it's "A&FDIAL", I don't know what it's named on the FT-450) that enables, or disables, the main tuning knob in AM and FM modes.

Whatever it's called, set it to "ON".

Yaesu's logic is that AM & FM signals tend to be "channelized", and you should use the click-stopped multifunction knob (the "DSP" knob) to change frequencies in 2.5, 5, or 10 kHz steps.

You're correct! Main tuning dial does not work in AM or FM - found it hidden on page 19 of the manual. The DSP/SEL does the tuning. But I found that can be changed in the menu.

Must be a reason for Yaesu to move the tuning to that little dial for AM and FM...

Operator was defective :-) not the xcvr...
