The book 'Single Sideband Principles and Circuits' by Pappenfus, Bruene and Schoenike (all of Collins) has a chapter on Balanced Modulators. There's less than a page on vacuum tube balanced modulators, and many pages on modulators using diodes.

In general, the balanced mixers using tubes do not provide a lot of drift free performance, but it isn't so important for frequency changers to stay so well balanced.
