Pretty much all I do is digital; from what I understand all my DSP should be off when running digital modes, so Ive been able to figure out how to turn all the DSP stuff off from the menus and when Im in RX the DSP indicator is off, but as soon as I go to TX it comes back on?  This isnt normal is it?

Also, sometimes when i TX, my radio beeps at me.  not sure why.  I keep the TX power to about 40w and my ALC is at zero.

If you use the equilizer on ssb that will cause the display to read dsp. On my FT-857 the display will read dsp even in cw while transmitting. Not sure why this is.
