Wire antenna

Can the hive recommend a wire antenna for my Yaesu vx7r?  I saw this set up in another thread and it looks interesting.  I'm most interested in powering my ht via car battery and stringing up some antenna wire for enhanced reception.  Here is a link to the other thread w/ a photo of the set up in question.

Howdy KJ4SKP,

In looking at the site you linked, I assuming you mean field expedient not mobile/in motion. 

There are a number of folks that make "roll up" J-Pole antennas for HT use.  Internet search on those should be productive.  A number of them work dual band and are cheap.  Also Radiowavz makes 2M and 440 double bazooka antennas. Not sure that's what you'd want though, but provides food for thought. 

You could also make a hasty 1/4 wave ground plane/dipole for each band by stripping off the band appropriate length (approx 19.25" for 2M and 6.30" for 440) of the jacket off of some RG-58 coax and pulling the center conductor out through the shield so the shield hangs free (counterpoise)...instant antenna.  Double the lengths for halfwave.  Then run that back to the proper connector for your radio and pull it up into a tree with a little fishing line and you're on the air.  Easy to put something like that up vertical or horizontal.

Lots of options, store bought and home brew.
