Help part 2

In the process of adding a different gps to my aprs mobile set up.  Have been using a garmin etreck vista and trading it out for a garmin gps18

Hit a snag an need help verifying that I do got everything wired up right

Gps 18 lvc wiring

Red - power
black - gnd
white - transmit data
green- receive data

2.5mm 3 connector jack for radio

white - data in
red - data - out
shield - gnd


Connected power to 5v power supply.
wired white to white
green to red

from what i can tell that is all correct and the unit should be working.  Hooked it up to the radio (kenwood rc-d710 head) an turned power on an waited 5 mins and nothing happened. gps indicater on display wont flash indicating its receiving data.  all gps data is set correct on the head as receives an works when have have other gps unit plugged in.


Any one have any idea how could check to make sure it is working right or did i goof something simple up in the progress of wiring it?

Some things to check that I don't see in your list:

Is the Garmin set to output NMEA data or GARMIN data?
Is the baud rate on the Garmin set to the same rate as the radio?

It sounds like you're using an Alinco radio (guessing), but you might list the radio in case there are some radio-specific suggestions for your setup.

Connected power to 5v power supply.
wired white to white
green to red

Use the other (26 ga) ground wire to complete the circuit to the radio

white -> white
green -> red
black -> shield

I have the same setup, but with connectors. You need to run signal ground (pin 5 on a 9 pin serial) between the GPS and radio.

Radio is a yaesu 8900  aprs interface is kenwood RC-D710 head connected via pg-5j interface cable

Gps is garmin gps 18 lvc - bare terminated wires

Like mentioned Power is connected to 5v source.

both blacks from gps and shield from 2.5mm connector all go to ground

white from gps to white on connector and green from gps to red of connector.

From what i can tell that is all correct.  According to garmin that gps is already preset at nmea and 4800 baud. Plugged it into radio and power. waited for a bit and gps indicator on head wont start blinking indicating it it receiving data. 

Should be plug in and good to go, in my case it not happening.

Update

Figured out what the problem was and why things weren't working right.

How have it currently wired is tx-tx and rx-rx.  Pulled the jack out of the radio one barrel and it started working. apparently need to flip the connections so that they are tx-rx instead of how they are right now as mentioned at start of this response. Nothing like simple detective work to figure out such a simple opps moment. LOL
