Yaesu G-450XL Possessed!

Sometimes when I turn the rotor on it will swing as much as 30 degrees back and forth for no apparent reason then stop. Not sure if the wind may have been blowing the beam around when it was off?? Seems odd. It will cycle like this a couple of times then return to normal. Any ideas?

   Depending on age/type of rotator control box in your shack the first and easiest thing to check is the wiper and contact points for tightness,clean,corrosion,electrical etc.If ok then the hard part,the elctrical and possible loose gear slippage in mast unit.It might help to be more specific with your make/model of controller/motor.FWIW I had similar problem and found two broken off nylon gear teeth in the mast rotator motor unit.

When the rotor is acting up, the control box sounds just like I am turning the antenna, you can hear the gears whatever making the same sound it does when it is functioning properly.

had the same problem with a 1000sdx, sent to yaesu, the fix was in the control box, just resorder the connections.

I'm not totally familiar with that rotator, but the problem may be with the brake--if it has one.  If its slipping and the control unit senses the slippage, the control unit may be trying to reposition the antenna all by itself.

Just something else to think about--FWIW.  73!
