Considering a 6BTV verticle but worried about snow build-up at the base.

Snow and Ice are not a problem, unless you start messing with it and it's frozen to important things like feedlines, grounds wires, etc.  Build it well and let the snow lay there all winter.  Fresh water is a non conductor.

I like the flower pot idea. On another board someone suggested a big flower pot. Sounds easier to cut open the trash can idea, though, and fit it around the mount. That solves the radial question, too. Just install it according to the manual and snow-proof it with a non-conducting cover. And yeah-- weather-proof the heck outa the connector!

Snow won't affect your antenna tuning or performance.  The base of my 160 inverted L is in 2 feet+ snow and it works just fine.
