My ex-XYL bought me an HW-7

I was looking at the KX3, but I already have FT817, and if I did operating from the couch I would use a laptop and remote control back to the shack.  I don't do backpacking, but I do travel.  If I operate from the hotel, the 817 seems to offer everything I need.

But the KX3 does have me intrigued.  I am watching it closely...

Yeah...that KX3 is a keeper.  I miss my FT-817ND, but once I get back on my feet here (post-divorce) I think I'll be saving for a KX3.  The CW-to-RTTY feature is a winner!

I've written about this a few time today (namely on my website and the QRP-L), but as an update to this post about my ex-wife's gift HW-7, I used it this past weekend during the CQ WPX CW Contest.  I played around with it on 20 meters, and even though I made only a few contacts, I am loving this radio more each time I use it.  I even made a quick QSO after work today with N4FOC's Special Event Station. 

Using this antique is like driving a real Model T Ford.  It takes a lot of finesse, and it's not a Bugatti Veyron...but it IS a car.  Likewise, my HW-7, even though it takes almost constant adjustment and tweaking of the preselect, it's still a FUN radio.  It really makes you have to work for the QSO.

So...going from an FT-817ND to an HW-7?  A bit like life handing me lemons?

My friend W2MDW has a KX3 and he likes sitting on his couch and working DX with it.  I've seen the photos...it's pretty cool.  Reminds me of when I had a Lektrokit Spider Jr, and could play radio while laying in bed.

I'm new to QRP, and I brought my KX3 on my trip to Europe.  I'm having a lot of fun just laying in bed making contact after contact.  What a fun radio, and it wasn't a pain to bring over.  I got it for making contacts from hiking trips, but it's so easy to set up that I find I use it a lot more than I expected.  I brought wire to make a dipole, but the 28' wire I threw out the window is doing enough to keep me busy.
