after installing fl-101 filter in this rig, need to activate the filter thru menu. whick buttons do i press to get to the menu?

Turn the rig off.
Hold LOCK down and turn the rig on.
Use MENU or BAND up and down to get to the option you want.
Use the main dial to change the options.
Turn the rig off to exit the menu system.

I installed the same filter in my original IC-706 after many years operating cw without any filter.  It was like a brand NEW radio.  Suddenly I was able to operate in the crowded areas that I could not before. 

I believe you will find it is some of the best money you have ever spent on ham gear.  I hope you have the same experience.    73, Mike KE4ILG

If you want to use that filter for digital modes as well as CW:

. . . Tell the rig that it's a "narrow SSB" filter, rather than an FL-101.

That will enable it _both_ for CW and SSB.   It will behave strangely (the center frequency won't be the same on USB and LSB in SSB mode), but you can fix things with the IF SHIFT control.
