Agreed, adding some counterpoises would help the elecraft suggested antenna that I use and it would not add too much weight. For hiking, I find it adequate and easy to setup. I'm usually on the air in under 5 minutes.

There are certainly better antennas out there. It all depends what your needs are.

I used two 25' wires for those bands. One goes up into a tree at an angle and the other is place on the ground under the upper wire.

Did you connect direct or via tuner? All 3 bands 20/30/40? What were your average results? Thanks

This is direct to the KX1 internal tuner. It's difficult to say how well this worked as I have no reference. But it made contacts without too much work and I was quite happy with it.
