Hello all, need some help I have a Yaesu 8000 and the memory battery died. I did some reading and decided to take it to a two way radio shop as there is no ham shop around and I need a battery put in. They said they will get it taken care of for me only issue is I need to confirm what side of the battery goes up and down because I of course forgot. Shame on me. I believe the positive side was up, but need to confirm. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The service manual has a drawing of the front panel unit which shows that the positive side is up and the connector is towards the center of the PCB.

An LMR Bench Technician appreciate a good service manual for the radio.
When you bring that WITH your radio -- you get a higher grade of competence.

Your lithium coin cell (BT3001) is:  Sanyo or Sony CR2016-TS1

The Panasonic CR2016/F2N available from Digi-Key as P222-ND should be suitable, at $1.03 each.

I'd be concerned about a Service Tech that could not figure out the proper polarity for installing a missing memory cell battery.

Even with no Service Manual or schematic available, it should be a matter of a minute or two more for the competent tech to find the polarity using nothing more than eyesight, knowledge and the ohmmeter.

The tech that is going to do the work was actually gone for the weekend and the owner deals with the vehicle installations mainly. I was mainly asking for my own peace of mind. I completely understand what your saying I'm sure he knows he just wasn't there at the time. Excellent point though.

It only requires reading the FT-8000 Service Manual (English) with its block diagrams, schematics, and parts lists.

Backlighting is provided by FOUR Lamps on the LCD/Panel board.

The Exploded radio diagram shows the PANEL and CONTROL boards and locations.

As you can see and read from the LCD / PANEL schematic diagram,
22 ohm resistors drop the supply voltage to 7.2 V for these 8 Volt lamps (backlighting of LCD).
