Hi all,
I have Yaesu VX8 DR HT and I was wondering if anyone has run with rechargeable AA batteries in the battery case?  It seems like a good way to have, potentially, a good source of energy for when the power goes out and you kill the lithium one.  Thoughts?

Having some [live] batteries is always better than just having dead batteries. The AA case for the radio only holds 3 cells, which means it'll have about 1/2 the voltage of the Li-ion packs. Consequently, your radio's output power will be less with the AA pack than with the Li-ion packs. But, less output is still better than no output.

While you're looking for alternate energy sources, look into a 12-v cigarette lighter adapter (EDC-5B) so you can charge your batteries while in a car.
