Hi,
I am hooking up my FT857D to my computer. I've used the 857D successfully for several years in concert with Ham Radio Deluxe. I have a new transceiver (TS590s) and want to use my 857D for UHF on the same computer. The TS590s hooks up nicely using a USB data connection to the computer (Dell Dimension 8200 XP) Works fine with HRD.  HRD offers a second connection option connection. So after hooking up the 857D as usual I go to plug in the Data Cable (one end is 8 pin CAT Linear plug and the other end is a serial connector) Problem: when I plug this in to the computer the 857D goes to transmit.  I have to turn off the transceiver-on dummy load- to restore a default situation.  Trying various connections in the Buxcom Rascall interface I've eliminated all other connections as the source causing the 857D to transmit. The source is the serial plug to CAT connection.  Ideally with all plugs connected correctly, HRD will read the 857D and present the screen representing that transceiver as it does the TS590s. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Mike W3PDR  - KR6MB was my Marine Corps station in Okinawa in 1964.  Smiley

I'm no expert on HRD, its interfaces, or your radios, but thought I'd ask a couple of questions to make some things clear, seeing as how you've had no answers after a few days...

1a) You can hook the 857 to the current computer by itself (no 590) and it works fine?  What port?
1b) Can you hook it up to other USB ports and it still works?
2a) You can hook the 590 to the current computer by itself (no 857) and it works fine?  What port?
2b) Can you hook it up to other USB ports and it still works?
3) So, your claim is that when you hook up the 590, then the 857 to that same computer, using the already-tested USB ports as before, the 857 goes into TX?

Thanks N2NG for responding. My original CAT Cable had the Yaesu CAT connector on one end and a serial port connector on the other.  I went to Amazon and ordered a newer CAT cable with a USB connector.  (Amazon search came up  with Valley Entpz - Rigby, Idaho)  This CAT cable loads the drivers when plugged in to a Windows 7 Pro computer.  Starting up the 857D and Ham Radio Deluxe- HRD responded instantly, representing the FT857d on the screen. (of a second computer.)  Hooking up the BUXCOM Rascal with DATA and USB plug  (for digital stuff)  should work fine, although its not tested yet on the new computer. I use the auto detect to allow HRD to find the port for the 857d. Serial ports must differ from one old computer to another- the 857d CAT/Serial cable worked fine on a Dell Professional XP- but not the Dimension 8200 XP.  That second computer, the Kehtron Windows 7 is state of the art with no serial port connectors, only a gang of USBs,  solved my problem.  Again thanks for  your time and questions. Thinking through the problem first-before posting a confusing question- is a good practice.  Smiley
