Thanks N2NG for responding. My original CAT Cable had the Yaesu CAT connector on one end and a serial port connector on the other. I went to Amazon and ordered a newer CAT cable with a USB connector. (Amazon search came up with Valley Entpz - Rigby, Idaho) This CAT cable loads the drivers when plugged in to a Windows 7 Pro computer. Starting up the 857D and Ham Radio Deluxe- HRD responded instantly, representing the FT857d on the screen. (of a second computer.) Hooking up the BUXCOM Rascal with DATA and USB plug (for digital stuff) should work fine, although its not tested yet on the new computer. I use the auto detect to allow HRD to find the port for the 857d. Serial ports must differ from one old computer to another- the 857d CAT/Serial cable worked fine on a Dell Professional XP- but not the Dimension 8200 XP. That second computer, the Kehtron Windows 7 is state of the art with no serial port connectors, only a gang of USBs, solved my problem. Again thanks for your time and questions. Thinking through the problem first-before posting a confusing question- is a good practice.
