how hard is it to get a new call sign and does it cost anything to do it?

There are companies out there that will do the paperwork for you as I recall. Try googling vanity call and you should get some hits. The fee is cheap. The test will be to get the call you want.

Good grief!  Don't pay anybody to do the paperwork for you.  There are instructions on the web:

http://www.arrl.org/applying-for-a-vanity-call

The price is always changing, but it's presently $15 for the 10-year term of your license grant paid at the time of application and renewal.  Be sure to pick a valid and available callsign, though.  If you want a good laugh, take a look at the rejected applications sometime.

You can apply on the FCC website and it is $15. I even applied for 2 of my fellow ham friends, and did the application for them online. I charged nothing. They paid the FCC by credit card.
