Ok, there was a certain messy order to Einstein's area if you look carefully at his desk.( more my style!) Mr Pease's office looked like he was a candidate for the "Hoarders, Buried Alive" show. I'm surprised that the fire Marshall allowed it. I'm sure he was a great guy, but I wouldn't want to have lived with him.

Einstein's desk looked normal.  Pease's desk was a dirty pig stye.  No excuse for that kind of mess no matter how smart or indispensable someone is perceived to be.

I bet his personal hygiene was not much better.  Like too many Hams.

SWL2002,
Bob Pease was a highly respected engineer and manager, most recently at National Semiconductor and wrote a column for "Electronic Design" magazine.
I can't help but wonder what YOUR credentials read like.  Oh!  And. the word as used in that context, is spelled "sty".

I am thinking of a two word phrase ending in "retentive"...

Hello Einstein wannabe, I know who Bob Pease was and I certainly read his columns for Electronic Design.  Does not mean he had good hygiene or good manners. The condition of his office demonstrates that he had no respect or concern for others.  Who wants to be in the cubical next to a dirty, stinky genius?  I bet he even wrote an article entitled "What's All This Soapy Stuff, Anyhow?".

And thanks for your Anal Retentive spelling check.  I wonder how many of your posts on eHam have typographical errors?

Aw!  Now that was a crummy thing to do.  I won't be in a big hurry to participate in this site any further.  NO sense of humor, Mike!

Remember when QST (or was it CQ?) used to sponsor
an annual "Messiest Shack Contest"?
Folks used to
send in some pretty amazing photos of junk piled
on every available free space.

Not sure WHY they had the contest, besides it
being somehat humorous. I *think* they stopped
it for several reasons:

1) Some people thought it was "OK'ing", in a backhanded way,
unsafe electrical hookups, as well as trip & fall hazards.

2) It started to become fairly obvious that these "shacks"
were created just for the photo contest. Like moving all
of your dead test gear and dead radios from the garage
into the "shack", piling it on tables, the floor, and calling
it a "station". Then after the photo was taken, moving
it all back to the garage.

3) I think there were a few hams murdered by their XYL's
over these conditions. (Just kidding).  Grin

Any oldtimers remember what year they discontinued
that photo "contest"?

I don't remember when they discontinued that contest, but a real picture of my real shack at the time was one of the ones that many thought was a setup.

It wasn't.

But at that time, my operating bench was also my test bench...

I think it was QST, and I think it just fell out of favor.  BTW, it was never a 'contest' so to speak, it was just a 'send in your picture' type thing.  They (the editors) stopped getting so many pictures of genuine messy shacks (as you said, some were purposefully 'done up') and it just stopped from lack of interest.

As they say, pictures or it didn't happen

I think my identical cousin, also a ham, may have the original snapshot, will have to ask him about that next time I see him.
