1N34As are the best choice for D1-D4. The 1N4148s are fine for the option output peak clipping. None of the four 1N34A diodes are used for clipping protection. D1 and D2 are part of a peak detector, and D3 and D4 are the variable attenuator circuit along with the series 10k resistor.

You're right, there isn't a good place in this circuit to light up an LED.

A few years ago I made a similar circuit as an AGC for the television. It comfortably levels out the blasts of audio during television commercials.

Just a pity the old Plessey Semiconductors SL6270 is no longer made....one IC, no problems!

W2AEW - Alan:  I was notified today that my "leveler circuit" boards order has been sent to the fabricator.  They also pointed out that my order makes 597 boards made so far!!  Thought you'd like to know.

Oh, that us awesome!  I'm so glad that Ludvig SM6XUN designed those boards!  I wish I could hear more from people that built some and learn how well they worked.

Alan:  I received my three boards from OSHPark two days ago and I'm very impressed with the quality!!  I was also startled with the very small size.

I was somewhat concerned about having room in my existing "Audio Enhancer" boxes where I could fit another board.  I don't think I'll have a problem!!

I'm now waiting for parts to stuff these three boards and very anxious to see how they work with my Audio Enhancer circuits.  It will also be interesting to see how they work with CW as one questioned here.
