It only seems complex to those who have never seen nor done it.  Spin welding is easy, and is also as old a technology as the metal lathe itself.

Our fix was to drill down the remaining shaft about 1/4" and tack-welded a metal sleeve in place.  It's not factory by any means but it is functional.  Thanks to all who responded...
