I'm one of the 766 views. The reason I had not replied was because I have not used
the older Tarheel 100. I had (traded it recently) a 100a HP and overall, it was a decent
antenna. I still have a 200a HP and it works quite well. It has the taller mast and puts
the coil above the cab of my pickup. The 100a HP had the shorter mast and, "I felt" that
having the coil a bit below the level of my pickup's cab, hindered performance . Not much,
but, I do think the 200a is better.
I have seen the older generation of 100's at hamfests and just looking at them, I see no
difference between them and the one I had. If it is anything, it is probably an improved drive
motor. I would suggest you call Tarheel Antennas Tuesday and ask them. That way, if you are
thinking about buying a used 100, you will have better information to go on.
Good luck. The Tarheel antennas are decent antennas. But, like anything else, good performance
depends heavily on your installation.
Oh, have you looked at the REVIEWS section here on eham? You might find your answer there. But, you will have to sift thru several pages of reviews to get to it.
