It's pretty simple in my mind.  It's not in the example I provided that the Flex 5K is not a great radio.  Even at the end of the year it will still sit in the top 10.  Lol, if people really want a great radio they wouldn't do bad to pick up a used flex at $2500 as its still going to out perform most other radios out there expect at CW and Except for contesting.

In the same token though at $3K they can get a modern DDC SDR with the capability of 14 Receivers.  There is no faulty math in a decision like that.

If a user gets into the new radios now, including the 6K series they will get the most bang for their buck probably.  That's not exact because it depends also on how long companies take to obsolete each other and themselves.  But right now in SDR radios, we have a software gap, not a hardware gap.  Software severely lags hardware capabilities.  So unless someone has got the next killer SDR package coming out with their new hardware it's a good bet one can get 3-4 years out of them if they buy them now.

See the article about hype, that's the other factor in it all.

Couldn't help but notice a barely used Argonaut VI is going for about $150 less than current new retail price. About a 15% hit just for driving it around the block...

BTW, if Grandpa happens to be tossing out his old, decrepit, discontinued, Argo 516, please have him toss it my way :-)
