I searched the forums bit and didn't see this question come up.

I just learned that my great grand dad was a ham in England and first licensed in the 1930's.  Is there a way to research what his call sign might have been?  He was apparently quite active in the hobby until he passed but nobody apparently has any more info. Since I'm a newbie ham, I am finding this tidbit of family history very cool.  I guess it's just in the blood.

You could try asking RSGB. He may have been a member.

His call sign would have been somewhere in this sequence:

1920-1939     G2AA
1937-1938     G3AA
1938-1939     G4AA
1921-1939     G5AA
1921-1939  G6AA
1936-1937     G8AA
Pre-War      G2AAA

As far as I know there were no licences issued during WW2, and post war it was 1946 starting with G3AAA. I hope this helps narrow your search somewhat.
