I have been thinking of building myself a fully automatic tuner, similar to Palstar's or the yet to be released Alpha.  However, I have been unable to find any detailed description of the algorithm used in such tuners. Has anyone come across any book, magazine, or any other publication that describes the logic?

Basically the same as that which you would use operating a manual "L" Network Tuner.  Set the capacitance to mid range and try your inductor values until you get a dip in SWR.  Then try the capacitor values for the largest dip.

From there you can add complexity by: measuring frequency and storing the previous "best" values as a starting point; adding an interface to control/be controlled by the radio for tuning.
