I am a little confused in figuring out the time expressed in ZULU. If a contest runs from 1400Z to 2300Z what is the actual LOCAL time for people in California? Or in the NY area?

go to 'alphaclock' download the digital clock to your computer. set for UTC or GMT or Zulu.. al lthe same.
set the colour you like. You may get a 'cant load all files' message. but it extracted the clock and it shows up on the top line of your screen ;.. check to start on boot up etc. drag it to the left a few inches or it covers up the minimize and cancel blocks.
its not straight forward loading as aclock has lots of different downloads. the clock was down the list a bout 3 or 4 .

Zululand is below Swaziland so Zulu time is 9 hours ahead of California

Does that mean Swazi time is one hour earlier or later than Zulu time?

Zulu time is also called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or Universal Coordinated Time (UTC).

Since none of the smart-alec replies actually answered the question... Look here for a UTC-to-local-time conversion chart for U.S. time zones: http://weatherarc.com/utc-time-conversionAnd here's a world-wide on-line UTC conversion tool: http://www.timezoneconverter.com/cgi-bin/tzc.tzcIf you use a contest-logging computer program, it usually will contain a provision to tell it your local time zone, and it will convert the time-and.date to UTC (ZULU) automatically. 73, Mel - KS2G

Four hours ahead of the US East Coast during Daylight Savings Time, five hours ahead if Eastern Standard Time is observed..

There is a Hamclock program that you can run on your desktop in zulu time. Then you never have to worry again.
