Kenwood TS-850 Acc.2 Noice on PTT

I recently purchased the subject radio and discovered that when my TNC is plugged into the Acc.2 jack, noise is transmitted when the mic is keyed while out of digital mode. No voice is present, just noise. Having had an 850 when they first came out, I do not remember having this problem as I did a lot of HF packet back in those days.

There is no difference if the TNC is on or off...it is a PK232, by the way. Also, the processor has no efect on the problem.

Anyone have a clue what might be happening?

I used to have the Ts-850 and used a Kam with it.  Here is a website that tells about a mod for this problem:

"A common problem when using a KAM-Plus multimode with the Kenwood TS-850 or TS-450 occurs when the KAM-Plus is coupled to the Accessory-2 socket on the back of the transceiver, producing noticable distortion of the transmitted audio when using the microphone in SSB mode."

I think if you google this problem you will probably find a lot more.  I don't really anybody modding their radio unless they feel comfortable doing so.
