Hate that telemarketing call?
Did you know that Radio pushed for the ham radio rules that ban commercial activities?
You see, when the phone was introduced, people would call others by name, party lines.
Later, a system of "Rings" was developed.
People would listen in on others calls.
So, someone figured out that they could do a really long ring, just keep cranking until somebody picked up, and when they did, they hear all about the latest specials!
Radio picked up on this, and started "Commercial Segments" in the programming.
Newspapers were furious!
The Federal Radio Commission, a part of the Department of Commerce.
